About The Carroll County Market

A Word About the Proprietors of The Carroll County Market

Glenda Jones and Cecil Abels have been brother and sister since Cecil “Tot” was born; but not since Glenda was. It’s been that way ever since they appeared into their family.

Glenda was a career school teacher with a penchant for a good times and travel. Daddy said Glenda’s middle name was “Go,” and purportedly Cecil and Glenda were: “cut from the same bolt.” As far as anyone in our family knew, Glenda was a Queen in the good times category before any of us heard of a Sweet Potato Queen. She could teach you all to do the “Stroll” in the living room floor to the sounds of Sam and Dave, love a banana sandwich (with mayonaise) enough to eat like 12 of them once when dared to “…just eat all you want.” and sing radio station ID’s in a trio while at Mississippi State University. Though she has suffered tragedies in her life, she always had the spirit and joi de vivre to buoy the spirits of others in the process. As helpful as Glenda is to others, it is also good to know that she is a forgiving soul with a heart of gold. Aggravations at her foibles are a waste of time better spent elsewhere as all of us who know her know well. She lives in Carrollton with her husband Sterling Paine Jones.

Cecil finished two years at Holmes Junior College in Goodman, MS “Go Dogs!” before realizing his personal compass was spinning like a cat around a cranking motor. Following in his Daddy’s footsteps, he joined the Navy for a hitch. The world was certainly out there to be reckoned with by and reckon he did. Finishing Navy training as a Hospital Corpsman, Fleet Marine training and tours with the Marines, Preventive Medicine School and a degree in Environmental Science in the California State College (Peralta) he continued a career as a Navy Environmental Health Officer. He retired as a LCDR, MSC, USN in 1997. While in the Navy and after, Cecil learned to surf, won military and civilian bluegrass band contests, Tennis titles, ran 6 Marathons, became a Divemaster, learned alpine and nordic skiing survived in the Snowy Maine woods for 10 days with a crew of 5 and only two rabbits and about 2 lbs of vegetables, with his wife raised 2 fine kids, 2 horses, and made over 50 gallons of maple syrup from trees on their own land. He lives in Carrollton with his Mom Doris (Burrell) Abels.
